4.OA.3 I can solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I can write equations to support my mathematical thinking. I can check that my answer makes sense using mental computation and estimation strategies.

Scenario:

Your best friend, Matt, has come to you for help because he knows you are a good planner and math student. His family has given him the opportunity to plan the Ultimate Fall Break Vacation. He has one week to make a plan for what his family will do before he has to show it to his parents. His Mom, Dad, and 6 year old Sister will be going with him. The family will be going to Orlando, FL for 5 days and 4 nights from 10/16-10/20. The family has saved $6,000 for this vacation. This money must cover all of the activity and travel expenses. They have decided to book their vacation with Southwest Airlines because they will give them a deal to book everything together. Matt’s family has given him some price guides to help him create a plan. It will be up to him to decide which package to choose and how to spend their vacation time. There should be a balance of activities that the whole family will love. His sister loves to watch the Disney Channel and he is a huge Harry Potter fan. You think you can help him plan a fun trip for everyone.

Today, you will use the guides provided to help your friend plan his vacation. You will then use the information to help him present the ideas to his family as a written report, oral report, poster, or slideshow. Your presentation must include:
  • Vacation Package Analysis and Cost
  • Daily Schedule of Family Activities, Time Allotted, Cost, and Reasoning
  • Budget for the Total Trip including Travel, Accommodations, Food, Shopping, and Entertainment Expenses
